The BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit invites anyone in the field of injury prevention to join our webinar presentations. Speakers from around the world make presentations on relevant topics related to injury prevention, with a focus on evidence-based information and new research.
Each year there are at least six one-hour presentations which include time for questions from participants.
Thursday, January 24, 2019, 10:00 AM PST: The epidemiology and control of cellphone use while driving
Dr. Motao Zhu, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology, Ohio State University; Center for Injury Research and Policy, Nationwide Children’s Hospital
The ubiquitous nature of cellphones in the U.S. and around the world has made cellphone-related distracted driving a prevalent public health concern presenting safety implications with devastating consequences for road users of all ages. This presentation will provide an overview of the epidemiology of cellphone-related distracted driving prevalence in the U.S. along with its associated risk factors. Control strategies (education, policy intervention, and technological approaches) will be discussed in the context of reducing and preventing cellphone-related distracted driving behaviors.
Bio: Dr. Motao Zhu studies traffic injuries and travel behaviors with a focus on policy and technology. He has received multiple grants from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He has authored more than 50 articles and 3 book chapters. Dr. Zhu is an elected Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology. Currently he is the Research Coordinator of young-driver research on the US Transportation Research Board of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
