American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Position Statement: Concussion in Sport

The recognition and management of concussions in sports is an evolving and controversial topic with a myriad of groups and organisations producing statements and recommendations. The purpose of this statement is to provide an evidence-based, best practises summary to assist physicians with the evaluation and management of sports-related concussion and to establish the level of evidence, knowledge gaps and areas requiring additional research. The American Medical Society for Sport Medicine (AMSSM) represents over 2100 non-surgical sports medicine physicians who have completed additional training in sports medicine after a residency programme in family medicine, internal medicine, paediatrics, emergency medicine or physical medicine and rehabilitation, many who have extended expertise in concussion evaluation and management.
