Inappropriate footwear is among the leading causes of falls in the elderly. It is also one of the least expensive and most frequently overlooked risk factors in falls prevention. Often, patients are placed in footwear more for comfort and ease of dressing than to reduce their risk of falling. Generally, slippers do not offer much support to the foot or ankle and easily slip off the foot. It is important to recognize if the patient walks or attempts to get up they should be wearing proper footwear.
